Meld

Meld is a free, open source tool for comparing files, directories and version-controlled projects developed in Python by Kai Willadsen. It features two- and three-way comparison of files and directories, supports numerous version control systems, and is particularly useful for reviewing changes to code. This tool can be downloaded or run without an install via the command line by copying the source code directly from the repository.

AustESE (Australian Electronic Scholarly Editing)

AustESE (Australian Electronic Scholarly Editing) is a workbench environment for facilitating the prodiction of electronic scholarly editions. Its features include functions for text import, markup, collation, textual analysis, annotation and tagging.

WordWanderer

WordWanderer is a free, web-based tool for visualizing and exploring text. It combines search, concordance and word cloud attributes to enable users to explore their texts. Users can paste their own texts into the box provided, or choose from a list of preloaded texts. It includes the ability to include or hide words based on parts of speech, a stop list or a user-provided list, and can display the text based on relative frequency, context or comparison. To view specific words, users can search them or click on them in the visualization.

Discursis

Discursis is a tool for analyzing text-based natural language with a focus on sequential analysis. It is particularly desgined to work with texts that have an internal temporal structure, such as a transcribed conversation. For each text, it generates a statistics-based internal language model and applies tagging to each temporal unit detected. The model and tagging are then used as the basis for an interactive visualization which permits examination at a various levels of granularity, ranging from a whole-text to a unit-by-unit level; it can also show topic usage patterns within the text. Users must purchase a license; both student and academic trial licenses are available.

Leximancer

Leximancer is an application for identifying key concepts in a text, and exploring the results through interactive visualizations and data exports. It includes concept and network cloud visualizations, a sentiment lens, a query system, and multiple data export options for futher analysis. The system accepts texts in a variety of formats including plain text, CSV, HTML and XML, and supports 17 languages beyond English. Users can either purchase a license for the desktop version (Windows and OS X supported), or purchase access to the online LexiPortal, which charges based on months of usage rather than on a subscription basis. A free trial of the LexiPortal is also available.

Alveo

Alveo is a platform for data discovery and analysis focused on communication data such as speech, text or video. Developed by the University of Western Sydney, researchers can use the Alveo infrastructure to store data, create collections, develop workflows, and analyze datasets with Alveo's built-in tools. The tools available span multiple disciplines and include common functions such as tokenization and concordance, plus interfaces between Alveo and other common analysis tools such as Apache's UIMA for NLP, and with programming languages such as Python and Java. Users can segmented and recombined data from multiple collections into a new, focused dataset for close analysis. Collection creators can set their own license and access rights, and users of a collection must accept the creator's conditions in order to use data from it. User accounts are free, but must be requested from and approved by Alveo.
