Wikipedia Scraping and Analysis
This list is focused on using the WIScker Wikipedia scraper to analyze the historical makeup of a Wikipedia article in different ways. It includes a number of visualizations that can be used with WIScker, and is an interesting and accessible first experience in text analysis. Additionally, by using the Wiki Map Project, users can map the connections between various articles linked to and by their original article of study.
WIScker is a tool for generating corpi from Wikipedia articles. It takes all of the various versions and edits of an article over time and creates a comparative corpus out of them. The corpus can then be analyzed using a built-in button to access voyant tools, or can be exported in a text file in various different formats.
Voyant is a suite of text analysis tools that work on the web. The default skin provides basic tools for analyzing a single text or a collection.
<p>Wiki Map Project was designed by Protovis and jQuery to visualize the data provided by Wikipedia. The program provides data animation and graph visualization with an option to explore the nodes connections. </p>
<p>Textal is a text analysis app for the iPhone and iPad offered by the UCL Centre for Digital Humanities. It creates word clouds from texts, websites, tweets and documents, then allows users to explore the statistics and relationships between words in the text. As a tool, it is intended as an introduction to to text analysis while expanding the functionality traditionally implemented in word clouds.</p>
<p>Timeline JS is a free timeline tool that can be poplulated from either a Google spreadsheet or a JSON file, and can draw media material from a variety of sources, such as Twitter, Flickr, Wikipedia, YouTube and more. It has been designed to be both easy to use and easy to embed the results in another web page.</p>
