OrlandoVision (OVis)

An application for visualizing a specific collection of authors, and the links or associations between them.  Links are determined by co-occurrence in the Orlando dataset.  The current dataset consists of authors, other people associated with them, and the text entries upon which these associations are based.  The application is designed in such a way that it could be extended to use other datasets as well.

The display can be customized in the several ways.  Node colours, shapes and sizes can be altered.  More significantly, the layout of the graph can be chosen from amongst several different algorithms.

As the collection is quite large, there are many filtering options available.  In terms of author, the following categories can be specified: gender, author/non-author, and author nationality.  The user can create complex search queries of the authors and the text, and specify a date restriction for the authors' life span.

Each association in the text has been tagged with one or more semantic attributes, i.e. the type or meaning of the relation between the people.  These tags have been organized into a tree, moving from general to more specific relations.  Each tag in the tree can be checked/unchecked, further filtering the results.

Finally, a data set and customizations can be saved as a session which can then be loaded at a later time.  In addition, screenshots of the current layout can be saved to an image file.

Voyant Bubbles

Bubbles reads the words in a document (or corpus) and displays the highest frequency words within proportionately large bubbles. Once you arrive to Bubbles, insert / upload your content and let the tool perform its analysis.

Voyant Knots

Knots is a visualization tool that helps to understand patterns of word relevance in one or more documents. Each term is represented as a twisted line – when the lines overlap it means a relevance or linkage within the terms.

Voyant Mandala

Mandala is a visualization tool that imports “textual” files to perform analysis on the frequency and linkage of words. For example, you may import a play and find the linkage and frequency between a word and its speaker.

List XML Elements (TAPoRware)

This tool is used to display the elements and attributes found in an XML document. It enables users to count all instances of an element and to view the structure/hierarchy of the document, in addition to listing attributes and attribute values. It is part of the TAPoRware collection of tools; please see List HTML Tags for a similar HTML tool.

Concordance - HTML (TAPoRware)

This tool finds the context for a specified word or pattern anywhere in an HTML document, and can be narrowed to only the text within specified tags. Users may specify the context length, and whether the tool returns the context length in words, sentences, lines or paragraphs. It is also available for XML and plain text documents, and is a part of the TAPoRware toolset.

This tool’s functionality has been incorporated into Voyant available online at www.voyant-tools.org.

Co-Occurrence - XML (TAPoRware)

This tool looks for two words a certain distance apart from one another in an XML document, within the user-specified limits of words, sentences or lines. The results can be narrowed to only include words found within certain tags. HTML and plain text versions are also available within the TAPoRware toolsets.

Co-Occurrence - Plain Text (TAPoRware)

This tool looks for two words a certain distance apart from one another in a plain text document, within the user-specified limits of words, sentences or lines. The results can be narrowed to only include words found within certain tags. HTML and XML versions are also available within the TAPoRware toolsets.

Collocation - HTML (TAPoRware)

This tool provides all words directly before and after a user-specified word, based on the desired context of words, lines, sentences or paragraphs. The results can be sorted alphabetically, by frequency, or by Z-score (an indication of how far and in what direction that item deviates from its distribution's mean, expressed in units of its distribution's standard deviation). XML and plain text versions are also available within the TAPoRware toolsets.
