OrlandoVision (OVis)

An application for visualizing a specific collection of authors, and the links or associations between them.  Links are determined by co-occurrence in the Orlando dataset.  The current dataset consists of authors, other people associated with them, and the text entries upon which these associations are based.  The application is designed in such a way that it could be extended to use other datasets as well.

The display can be customized in the several ways.  Node colours, shapes and sizes can be altered.  More significantly, the layout of the graph can be chosen from amongst several different algorithms.

As the collection is quite large, there are many filtering options available.  In terms of author, the following categories can be specified: gender, author/non-author, and author nationality.  The user can create complex search queries of the authors and the text, and specify a date restriction for the authors' life span.

Each association in the text has been tagged with one or more semantic attributes, i.e. the type or meaning of the relation between the people.  These tags have been organized into a tree, moving from general to more specific relations.  Each tag in the tree can be checked/unchecked, further filtering the results.

Finally, a data set and customizations can be saved as a session which can then be loaded at a later time.  In addition, screenshots of the current layout can be saved to an image file.

Voyant Term Fountain (beta)

Term Fountain is a tool for visualizing word frequencies, and a part of the Voyant suite of tools. It takes the most common words in a corpus and represents them as a fountain. This tool is still in beta.

Orlando Breadboard

Breadboard is an application that allows one to easily find and view authors, with a compact representation of their connections to other authors, places, literary references, organizations and miscellaneous.

Voyant Flowerbed (beta)

Flowerbed is a simple visualization tool for viewing up to two documents. Each document is presented as a “flowerbed”, wherein each word is a flower. The height of the flower is determined by the relative frequency of that word within the document. The petals on each flower represent features associated with the word. When two documents are present in chosen the corpus, the second is mirrored below the first. In this way it is possible to do a cursory comparison of the documents.

Voyant FeatureClusters (beta)

FeatureClusters is a visualization tool for viewing associations between words, based on commonalities in the feature sets of the words. This is illustrated using a force-directed graph, wherein each word is a node in the graph. Nodes are connected to one another if they share the same feature. Features are represented by the smaller circles (or petals) which surround each word. Moving your mouse over a word will show the feature details associated with that word. Clicking on a word will highlight its connections to other words.

List Tags - HTML (TAPoRware)

This tool lists all tags found in an HTML document, either uploaded by the user or from a web address. It is part of the TAPoRware collection of tools; see List XML Elements for an XML tool with similar functionality.

Co-Occurrence - HTML (TAPoRware)

This tool looks for two words a certain distance apart from one another in an HTML document, within the user-specified limits of words, sentences or lines. The results can be narrowed to only include words found within certain tags. XML and plain text versions are also available within the TAPoRware toolsets.

Co-Occurrence - XML (TAPoRware)

This tool looks for two words a certain distance apart from one another in an XML document, within the user-specified limits of words, sentences or lines. The results can be narrowed to only include words found within certain tags. HTML and plain text versions are also available within the TAPoRware toolsets.

Co-Occurrence - Plain Text (TAPoRware)

This tool looks for two words a certain distance apart from one another in a plain text document, within the user-specified limits of words, sentences or lines. The results can be narrowed to only include words found within certain tags. HTML and XML versions are also available within the TAPoRware toolsets.

Tokenize - HTML (TAPoR)

This tool splits an HTML document at specified points into 'tokens' - words, lines, sentences, paragraphs or characters. The user can specify characters, patterns, or tags upon which to separate tokens, and choose to have the results listed separator removed, appearing before the split, or appearing after the split. Versions are also available for XML and plain text within the TAPoR toolset.
